Kids Activities

We would like to invite all kids from all nationalities to come and join us for a fun journey through the history of Anatolia from hands on arts and crafts to music and art. Enjoy your day with practicing Turkish Folk dancing, listening to Turkish folk tales, coloring, painting, singing Turkish kids songs.

The stories of Santa Claus, the Trojan Horse, and Noah’s Ark are just of a few of the fun and exciting ways for children to learn more about Turkish culture.

Some of the highlights about the Kids Tent program will be:

  • Exhibition of the finalists’ artwork from the International Kids Art Contest and the selection of the “Most Popular Art” by the people visiting the Festival (All day)
  • Story Telling and book signing by Isik Soyturk (11:00-11:45), (15:00-15:45)
  • Demonstration of Traditional Turkish Designs by Emine Babali (13:00-14:00), (16:00-17:00)
  • Musical workshop by Daveed Korup (12:00-15:00)
  • Folk Dance workshop by Demet Cabbar (13:00- 13:45)
  • Interaction with Anatolian Shepherd (Sivas Kangal) (11:00-16:00)
  • Interaction with Turkish Van Cat (11:00-16:00)
  • Face Painting (all day)
  • Hands on Arts and Crafts ( all day)
  • Displays and boards from ancient Anatolia such as the location of Noah’s Ark, the battle of Trojan War, the story of Santa Claus, the place of Virgin Mary’s house,…etc (all day)

  • Rice activity with kilim designs by Serap Wiedemer (all day)  

  • Coloring, painting with Noah’s Ark, Trojan horse, Nasreddin Hodja…etc (all day)

  • Decorating your own frame and making tambourines with Lake Shore Learning Center’s professional Arts and Crafts Team. (12:00- 17:00)

  • Demonstration and application of paper marbling by Fazilet Ersoy (13:00-17:00)

  • Demonstration of Traditional Turkish Tile-Making by Mehmet Gursoy (15:00-18:00)

  • Decorating your own T-Shirts with Turkish designs by Emine Babali (12:00-17:00)

  • Evil Eye Bracelet making (all day)

Isik Soyturk graduated from Istanbul University, from the department of Archeology. Many of her articles about Turkish culture and archeology were published by different magazines. She has several photograph exhibitions. She lived in Holland between 1995-1999. While living in Holland she organized cultural activities for Turkish and Dutch kids. She gave speeches to the adults. She started publishing her own books called Thousands of Colors from Turkey. Right now she is the head of Filiz Yayincilik in Istanbul. www.filizyayincilik.com

Daveed Korup is Turku's lead drummer, a graduate of Northern Illinois University; playing darabuka (dumbek) and djembe. His style represents a synthesis of many of the world's dynamic percussion traditions. In addition to his performances on Turku’s recordings, Daveed has also performed on "Eyes behind the Veil" and "Seeds of Time", as well as making three drumming instruction tapes. He has just produced a hand drumming video with an accompanying book. www.turkumusic.com

Emine Babali is a native of Edirne, Turkey. She attended fabric painting courses in 1991 and has been practicing it since then. She worked as an Art Work Teacher at schools and International Clubs where she was a member between 1993 and 1997. Lately, she practices and works solely on Ottoman figures and designs and demonstrates her work at the festivals.
