The 2008 Turkish Festival Proudly Presents: International Kids Art Contest (View Flyer)

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he/she grows up”

Theme: “Paint the place where you would like to live”

(The Place could be your home, your community, your relationship with others…etc)

Deadline: September 27, 2008

Eligibility: Children from 5-13 years old This contest is open to all kids 5-13 years of age. Entries may be submitted in one of 3 categories;

Category 1 includes age groups 5-7. Category 2 is for 8-10. Category 3 covers ages 11-13.

Awards:

In addition to all the gifts, winners from each category will also receive books, t-shirt, and souvenirs from Turkey. Most Popular Art will receive additional $250

All winners will receive a Certification of Recognition Each category winners will have their art posted at Tulumba.com, Bonbon Magazine and Ata DC’s web sites

 How to enter this free contest: We request that each child submit original works of art, in any style or medium. Preferred sizes for the art work are “8.5 x 11”. Submissions should not be three-dimensional.

Artists must understand that their entry must be their original work –(compositions based on published material or completed with the supervision of an artist at a workshop are not eligible) and if accepted, will be published on our web site at www.atadc.org Art work will not be returned.

Most Popular Art At the exhibition, people who are visiting the festival will be able to vote for their favorite art among the 15 finalists. The winner for the most popular art will be awarded additional $250

Notification: All winners will be announced at the Turkish Festival on October 5th, 2008. The Finalists will be notified before the Festival Day. An awards ceremony will be held for the winners at 15:00pm at the Festival.

Judging: Entries will be prejudged and 15 finalists will be selected according to the interpretation of the concept, creativity, use of color and overall composition by the Torpedo Factory Art League School. The finalists’ art work will be exhibited at the Kid’s Tent on the day of the festival. The first, second and third place winners from each category will be selected from the 15 finalists at the festival by the panel of judges listed below.

Art League School of Torpedo Factory: The Art League, Inc., founded in 1954, is a multifaceted, nonprofit visual arts organization based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. The Art League is celebrating over 50 years of devotion to promoting and maintaining high standards in fine art in the Washington, DC area. The Art League seeks to stimulate and encourage artists by operating a gallery with many opportunities for members, including monthly juried shows of members work, other chances for exhibition of work and many educational possibilities. The Art League also operates a school with 2000+ students per term and a supply store for the purchase of art supplies by students and members. Nihal Kececi: Luminous colors, painterly brushstrokes, and an intimate gaze characterize the subtle elegance of Nihal Kececi's figurative and landscape paintings.  Bridging the gap between abstraction and representation, Kececi incorporates richly textured surfaces with ambiguous areas of complex hues.  Kececi's romantic visions and intense color palette draw on her cultural background, while her discerning eye and innovative approach point directly to her scientific research and interests.  Born in Turkey, Nihal Kececi now lives and works in Maryland.

M. Gaspy Brown: Entirely self-taught and inspired by visions, dreams and ideas, Gasby has become a prolific artist, painting over 100 pieces, capturing a variety of genres including abstract, realism and expressionism extracted from her life experiences and world view. Gasby draws particular inspiration from art greats William Tolliver, Annie Lee and Jacob Lawrence and has established her own signature painting style with the mixed media works of her "Praise" and "Celebration" series. Nil Şişmanyazıcı-Navaie: She is a communications and management strategist, the founder and president of Arts for Global Development, Inc; an advisor to numerous arts-infused development projects, and the creator/editor of internationally known art’ shake e-magazine that addresses interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and intersectoral issues in tandem with arts and development. Nil has given several presentations, led workshops, curated exhibitions, organized educational events, and published articles primarily on the arts and its involvement in the social sphere. Among those publications are 'Creative Change Worldwide (2005); and 'societal arts marketing: a multicultural, interdisciplinary, and international perspective' titled chapter in Arts Marketing book published by Elsevier (2004). In addition to her social change related efforts she creates mixed-media art, which primarily depicts human forms as well as the fusion and the balance it creates with nature and objects. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the US. http://www.art4development.net

Michele Cormier-Attfield: She was raised in Shediac, New Brunswick.  She moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992  upon completing a Master's Degree in Public Administration. Intrigued by art, she discovered her passion for painting, advancing her skills through a combination of course work and her own experience.
